We have some great sponsors this year that are helping us bring it up a notch: Animas Orthopedics/Rivergate Sports Medicine and Durango Coca-Cola are the presenting sponsors with many more helping to make it possible (flyer out soon).

PRACTICES: Wednesdays at 12noon

That for the first few weeks as later in the day conflicts with Football. Once you know the course you may practice at any time, just be aware in high traffic/paved sections. If the football team is using its whole practice area then avoid that part of the course (you can figure out a way do the barriers without conflicting). There is also baseball/softball/soccer and club sports using the area later in the day – it’ll be tough until November.

ALWAYS  KEEP  YOUR HEAD UP FOR PEDS AND OTHER TRAFFIC.

I have marked a ~ 6min. course starting at the softball complex toward Dirks Field (Soccer-East) then heading left (north). Orange flags mark the apex of turns 95% of the time – the other 5% they are there to give a long straightaway reference. When there are 2 and 3 flags it is a hairpin and/or in an area without a tree to mark the turn.

The Dirt Lovers Rally

The local mountain bike race scene is back this sunday with Park’s and Rec’s Dirt Lovers Rally. The race starts at 9am in Horse Gulch. The Rally will also serve as the DEVO teams final team race of the 5 month summer race season. For all the info check this city website.

Squawker Cup Finale is Sunday

race-7-course-map, squawker-cup-points-standings

“We have just met with the facilities director, grounds director and head grounds keeper and they have gotten a ton of complaints from campus goers about what was left behind from last weeks race. Rather than bicker back and forth we are taking responsibility and have agreed to do some mitigation work. This will show them that we have respect for what they work hard to maintain and what we like to play on. What they are concerned about is the mud tracks on the sidewalks (unsightly and risk management issue), some of the grass to cement transitions and some of the corners/ruts/cupping we created. FLC Grounds is marking up a map with the spots they have concerns about. So — After the race on Sunday please be prepared with regular clothes (unless you like gardening in your chamois), and one of the following: stiff brissle push broom, flat head shovel, garden rake or spade. We will walk the course and fix. Another crew will walk the course and pick up all the flagging, yet another will get the rebar/pvc. It really won’t be that much work if we get good numbers. We are getting some grass seed also and will do that where needed. In the future we will have a better pre and post muddy race contingency plan. Thanks for being a part of the CX season, see you Sunday.”  Dave Hagen

Muscle Cross is Tomorrow, Yes!

The third annual Muscle Cross is this Saturday, 10am at Buckley Park, the heart of downtown. Durango Cyclery is hosting the event, with the name rooting from owner Russell’s nickname, Russell the Muscle. The event is not you typical cross race as it includes many barriers and obstacles, as compared to the modern standard of one or two. Registration begins at 9am with the fees being $10 for adults and $5 for kids, all the proceeds will be going to the upstart Durango ReCyclery, a used bike shop located downtown.

The first event is the Kluncker Cross. 15 minutes of pain on any “non-racer” bike. Costumes and goofy things usually go down. Then the Kiddie Cross takes the stage with elementary aged kids taking to the course. Helpers are placed all along the course and the name of the game is super fun. Hot chocolate pours hot all morning, and the kids dig in when their race is over. Then at around 11:30 the B men and B women take to the course, followed by the A men and women at 12:40 or so. Last years race was cancelled due to poor turf conditions, but this year is looking perfect, so come on out and enjoy the show.

Posters will be for sale at the event

Squawker Cup Standings

The Fort Lewis College Cycling teams’ Squawker Cup Cyclocross Series standings have been tabulated after 4 rounds of racing. squawker-cup-points-standings This weekends race on campus begins at 10am in the cyclocross stadium. With a slightly different layout, the course designer Dave Hagen describes his work as a “power course” compared to last weekends technical cornering track. race-5-course-map Last week saw 62 racers on course, which was the biggest local cross showing in the history of our scene. See you there.

MTB Collegiate National Championships

This friday, in Banner Elk, North Carolina, kicks off the 2008 Collegiate National Championships for the all terrain mountain bike. Cross country is on friday, downhill and short track on saturday and dual slalom on sunday. Individual champions will be crowned in each event, throughout the week, but the big prize has become the Team Omnium Title. The teams are allowed to score 4 riders in each event, and the team with the most points in the end wins. Fort Lewis College has earned this title many times over, due to the flood of talent that flocks to Durango in hopes of catching a view of Ned Overend on their way to class. The host college, Lees McRae is currently ranked second to FLC and lost the omnium to FLC last year, which was also contested on their home turf. The battle is sure to be amazing. Go Skyhawks!
